Japan Trip

I had a little trip to Japan and visited old friends. Thank you everybody for your kind hospitality.
It was a beautiful autumn season and I could enjoy fresh foods & lovely scenery wherever I went.

I hope more people to experience the wonder Japan, the origin of karate.

Spinning Attack

One of the WSKF's characteristic points is spinning technique.
[Examples; from left kamae]
1. Moving forward Left kizami zuki --> Back turn 180° pivot on left foot --> Right jodan uraken.
2. Stepping back Right nagashi uke --> Back turn 180° pivot on right foot --> Left jodan haito uci.
You have to practice with the care of;
- quick and minimum movements while keeping balance.
- disadvantage while showing your back to the opponent.
It is hard to use in the competition, but it is also very effective if you can use them in a proper timing.        Spinning uraken trial (- missed! - not proper timing..)

Gedan Barai & Gedan Uke

There are a lot of terminologies in karate, and we are sometimes
using without knowing the correct usage.
e.g. Gedan barai (sweep) and Gedan uke (block)

Gedan barai; like the 1st movement of Heian shodan
--> The other hand touches on the body.
Gedan uke; like the 1st movement of Jion
--> The other hand does not touch on the body.

Gassyuku 2012

Gassyuku (training camp) in Victoria was conducted with great success.
Keep up good training everyone, and see you next year.

13 Jul 2012

Today's training

Team kata practice. This is very different from individual kata, each player should concentrate on synchronizing; rhythm, distance, kiai etc., then try to gain speed and power during repetitive training.

Tenseness & Relaxation

Karate training must be a very serious activity to avoid injury. All the people acting in the videos are very strict in usual training, but  these are rare cuts to find their relaxed face! Thank you for your help for my filming mates.

Ippon Shobu

Most of the techniques in Ippon Shobu are jodan/chudan zuki.
For people who are used to sport karate (Blue vs Red) might feel short of fun.
I like the sport karate too and hope this will be included in Olympic events someday.
But I think the longer you learn karate-do, the more you will be interested in this 'Ichigeki-Hissatsu' principle.

Comps Digest3

There are many cases of fighting with different size people, and bigger tend to beat smaller with heavy & hard-hitting and long reach. This is a typical example, I could not stop the opponent crashing into me. I need to think of strategy and train harder. Please give your good idea.    WSKF Stephen sensei thank you for the advice, I will pursue better ways.

Comps Digest2

Kata tournament rules are depend on the comp size.  Typically;
for 1st round: Shitei kata referee's choice (from Heian shodan to Tekki shodan) - Red/white flag system,
for 2nd round: Sentei kata referee's choice (from Jion, Empi, Bassai D, and Kanku D) - Red/white flag system,
for final: Shido kata competitor's choice (from the rest of Katas) - Point system.

Comps Digest1

The comps was traditional 'Shobu Ippon' kumite - kill with one blow - style. Mostly hitting the jaw or stomach with proper timing, distance and strength get into waza-ari.
Waza-ari + waza-ari = Ippon. (Much different from WKF style)

Special Seminar & Comps

Ogura sensei 7th dan was invited from Japan headquarter and we had very productive time.
More details later..

Grading test

The first grading for this year has been held yesterday.
It is not easy for these little kids to keep interest during the usual training, but they seem understand this must be a special day.

It must be good for instructors as well to recall this 'special nervousness' in old days.

It is said in Japanese 'Syoshin wasuru bekarazu'.

Tsuki & Uchi

The main difference between Tsuki and Uchi

Tsuki --> The impact point of the fist moves to the same direction with the forearm
Uchi --> The impact point of the fist moves at (right-) angle of the forearm

Make sense?

Special Seminar

Nishimura sensei 7th dan visited Sydney dojo and had a special seminar. This is one of the very basic questions from him, which no one could answer properly.

'What is the difference between Tsuki and Uchi?'
(Tsuki-- Oi-zuki, gyaku-zuki, Yama-zuki, Kagi-zuki etc.)
(Uchi -- Tettsui-uchi, Uraken-uchi, Shuto-uchi etc.)
What do you think?
