Japanese Counting
There are various ways of counting in
Japanese. In karate we use numbers for moves, name of kata, grades, etc.
but some people may be confused its usage.
Generally 4, 7, and 9 have two ways of
reading, and it is said that you can use alternative readings when you want to
avoid unlucky feeling or confusion.
4: Shi --> same pronounce as ‘death’; unlucky feeling -->Use Yon
7: Shichi --> similar pronounce to ‘Ichi’; confusion --> Use Nana
9: Ku --> same pronounce as ‘pain’; unlucky feeling --> Use Kyu
(1: ‘Sho’ is used specially for kyu/dan
etc.)
This
is just one of many interpretations. For the usage in your dojo, follow sensei’s instruction.

Referee & Judge
Referee/Judge practice is very important the same as technical training.
Good judging makes the games tense and smooth, also can avoid injury or confusion.
Ideally each dojo should own a set of judging flags as well (You can DIY).
- Special thanks to Mika, the professional creator-

Japan Trip
I had a little trip to Japan and visited old friends. Thank you everybody for your kind hospitality.
It was a beautiful autumn season and I could enjoy fresh foods & lovely scenery wherever I went.
I hope more people to experience the wonder Japan, the origin of karate.

Spinning Attack
One of the WSKF's characteristic points is spinning technique.
[Examples; from left kamae]
1. Moving forward Left kizami zuki --> Back turn 180° pivot on left foot --> Right jodan uraken.
2. Stepping back Right nagashi uke --> Back turn 180° pivot on right foot --> Left jodan haito uci.
You have to practice with the care of;
- quick and minimum movements while keeping balance.
- disadvantage while showing your back to the opponent.
It is hard to use in the competition, but it is also very effective if you can use them in a proper timing. Spinning uraken trial (- missed! - not proper timing..)

Gedan Barai & Gedan Uke
There are a lot of terminologies in karate, and we are sometimes
using without knowing the correct usage.
e.g. Gedan barai (sweep) and Gedan uke (block)
Gedan barai; like the 1st movement of Heian shodan
--> The other hand touches on the body.
Gedan uke; like the 1st movement of Jion
--> The other hand does not touch on the body.

Today's training
Team kata practice. This is very different from individual kata, each player should concentrate on synchronizing; rhythm, distance, kiai etc., then try to gain speed and power during repetitive training.
